Belly
dance is the oldest known dance. It originated in North Africa as
a body strengthening practice in preparation for childbirth. The
movements were primarily focused on hip and stomach isolations.
As dancers traveled, the dance evolved through the influence of
many cultures. American belly dance is a synthesis of intricate
arm and head movements from India, folk dance from Lebanon, and
the Romany (gypsy) traditions from Europe. Its roots in all of these
cultures were ritualistic and sacred.
The Three Sisters are completing research for a lecture series on
the history of belly dance and its function in modern culture. More
to come... |
